The one that catches people
The document on the day, not the name you will have
Airlines check the passport against the ticket. Nothing else in the process cares what you are called.
The two safe answers
| Approach | What it means | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Travel on the existing passport | Book everything in your current name. Change it after the trip. | Almost everybody. Simplest by a distance. |
| Change first, then book | Complete the change, receive the new passport, and only then book flights. | Couples with genuine time and a strong preference |
The mistake
Booking in the married name on the assumption that the passport will arrive in time.
If it does not, you are not flying. The airline is under no obligation to reissue the ticket, a name change on a ticket is frequently treated as a cancellation and rebooking, and the rebooking happens at whatever fares remain on the day.
What a marriage certificate does and does not do
Does not: reconcile a ticket that disagrees with a passport, at check-in or at a border.
Does: occasionally help with a hotel booking made in one name when your passport shows another, and it is worth carrying a copy for that reason alone.
While you are checking the passport
- Six months of validity beyond your return date is the usual requirement across this region
- Two to four blank pages, because a visa on arrival needs somewhere to go
- A passport that is valid but nearly full is a genuine problem at a border
- Both of you — it is remarkably easy to check one and forget the other
If you are changing name anyway
Do it after the trip unless there is a specific reason not to. The honeymoon is the worst possible window for it: you are busy, the paperwork is slow, and the downside of it not completing in time is the one cost on this entire site you cannot recover from.
